The door opens as soon as I knock. The butler nods to me. “Miss Finner.” He leads me to Alistair’s rooms and I knock, then go in. He’s in a chair, book in hand again.

“I hadn’t expected to find you reading…again. I mean, what with the fight today I thought you’d be, I don’t know, preparing somehow.”

Alistair smiles, and stands, walking casually towards me. “Please tell me you had hoped to find me half-naked and glistening with sweat.”

I can’t help but laugh. And I appreciate him making the effort to put me at ease with silliness. After the tense conversation last night, it’s certainly a pleasant surprise. I hadn’t known what to expect.

“You found me out. I’m not sure I would have been able to restrain myself.”

“In that case, come back in ten minutes and I’ll see what I can do,” he says, but of course there’s a distance between us. He’s stopped several feet away and neither of us is moving to close the distance.

“I wanted to wish you luck.” I even manage a step forward. He watches me, raises one brow as I take a step closer.

“Oh. Thank you. Can I get you something to drink? Tea or coffee? I think I have soda as well if you want it.”

“You drink soda?” I had never seen it on the island.

“One of the many things you don’t know about me,” he sighs. He gestures to the chair opposite him, and I sit down. “All of them equally irrelevant, I suspect. You know everything you need to know in terms of the important stuff.”

“What do you mean?” Because I’m pretty sure I know very little indeed about him.

“I kill people. It’s amusing and even if I stopped, it wouldn’t matter, would it?” He looks at me seriously, as if he’s hanging on my every word, memorizing my face.

“What do you want from me?” I blush. “I mean, what do you want me to say?”

“Nothing. I know nothing has changed. It’s just…difficult. Not the best word but there we are. How is Lee?” Alistair asks as he strides to a table. He opens a drawer and takes out a leather bookmark, puts it in the book and then sets it down on a small table.

“Fine.”

Alistair sits down across from me, brushes an invisible piece of lint off his well-worn jeans. He smiles as if at a distant memory. “When I was young, mortal, I imagined a life exploring.”

“I am not surprised.” I smile back.

“You can see it, can’t you? The regal bearing, the devastating good looks…”

“The ego,” I murmur.

He barks out a surprised laugh. “Yes, well. As I was saying, I had imagined being an explorer. And after I was turned and Europe became tiring for us, well, it seemed like it would be a great joke to travel the world with Lee and Cassandra by my side. We would be pirates and explore.”

“You don’t sound like you enjoyed it.” I lean back in the chair. I want to tell him how grateful I am that he’s trying to make this easy for me.
